Biography

Dr. Monica Carrer is an esteemed researcher and practitioner in the field of peace and conflict studies, specializing in everyday peace and micro-level dynamics of violence. She has conducted fieldwork research in a post-conflict setting in India. Her main research interest is learning about how people respond to everyday forms of violence and build everyday peace. Monica’s work was widely praised for its innovative perspective and its potential to reshape how scholars and practitioners approach conflict resolution. Armed with her academic prowess, Monica ventured into the realm of practical peace building. Her experiences in conflict zones across the globe, from post-conflict regions to areas grappling with ongoing tensions, provided her with valuable insights into the real-world application of peace and conflict studies.

In 2018, after earning her PhD from the National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Otago, she co-founded The Everyday Peace Initiative with Dr. Sylvia Frain – also an alumna of the National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at Otago – to bridge peace research and everyday peace action. Her current research for The Everyday Peace Toolkit Project looks at how people can respond to everyday violence by focusing on the micro-level dynamics of everyday violence in interpersonal interactions and in the context of structures of power. Their collaborative efforts extended to the establishment of the Everyday Peace Community, a global network that brought together individuals committed to creating positive change at the micro-level. This educational platform provided training and resources for individuals seeking to specialize in the micro-level dynamics of conflict and peace. Through workshops, seminars, and online courses, the academy became a hub for aspiring peace practitioners looking to make a meaningful impact in their communities.

Her publications, including articles and books, have contributed significantly to shaping the discourse in the field of Peace and Conflict Studies. Dr. Monica Carrer’s life and work exemplify a tireless dedication to promoting peace at the grassroots level. By unraveling the intricate threads of everyday life, she has not only deepened our understanding of conflict but also empowered communities to become active agents of change on their path toward lasting peace.
